You're Invited: An Introduction to the U.S. Census for Nonprofit Organizations

Every 10 years, the United States government conducts the census — a national accounting of every person living in every state, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. Nonprofits of every size and type play a crucial role in making sure the communities they serve are properly represented in the census by “getting out the count” and, most importantly, reaching what are known as “hard to count” or “traditionally undercounted” communities.

Accurate census data is essential for the equitable allocation of more than $675 billion in annual federal assistance to states, communities, and families. Yet historically, the census has disproportionately undercounted non-English speakers, LGBTQ+, racial minorities, young children, low-income households, and those experiencing homelessness.

The 2020 census faces unprecedented challenges, including:

In collaboration with The Institute for Public Policy and Economic Development and the U.S. Census Bureau, we’re hosting an informational session that will help you better understand how to prepare your organization and the people you serve for reporting U.S. census information.

Honoring and remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.

Words to remember:

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

“Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”“We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”

“There is nothing more tragic than to find an individual bogged down in the length of life, devoid of breadth.”

“Property is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man.”

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Moses Taylor Foundation Announces Request for Proposals to Reduce Older Adult Isolation

In January, Moses Taylor Foundation shared its 2019-2023 Strategic Plan. One of the core strategies included in this plan was a new initiative to reduce older adult isolation, a critical social determinant of health. The Foundation spent the first half of 2019 laying the groundwork and gathering information to launch this work and we are pleased to announce the first related funding opportunity:

Reducing Older Adult Isolation Planning Grant RFP

This grant opportunity will provide planning funds to a collaborative of organizations working together to create a community system to reduce older adult isolation in Lackawanna County.

The key outcome of the grant will be a plan for implementation of a coordinated system that includes a:
  • Shared isolation screening tool
  • Team of trained navigators to connect isolated older adults to services
  • Corresponding public awareness campaign

A broad array of wrap around supports will be provided to the funded collaborative to enrich the process, including data and evaluation assistance, subject matter expertise, and community input. At the conclusion of the planning period, it is expected that the chosen collaborative will utilize their developed plan to submit a proposal for implementation funding.

Introducing Our 2019-2023 Strategic Plan

The board and staff of Moses Taylor Foundation are excited to begin 2019 by sharing our first strategic plan. Thanks so much to the many partners who participated in our planning process. We hope you see reflections of your insights and recommendations throughout our plan. Our mission, vision and core values remain the same. This plan sharpens our focus and defines the impact we will aim to achieve over the next five years.

Our Plan

Our 2019-2023 plan centers around five core strategies:

  1. Expanding school-based health through broadly supporting school nurses and increasingly the availability of school-based health centers
  2. Reducing social isolation in older adults through public awareness, identification and connections to community resources
  3. Cultivating responsive grants to identify and address community health needs
  4. Championing increased investment in nonprofit capacity building
  5. Strengthening the Foundation's capacity to operationalize its vision

We believe these strategies reflect the best opportunities for Moses Taylor Foundation to improve the health of Northeastern Pennsylvania over the next five years. It balances new initiatives to expand school-based health and reduce older adult isolation with a continued commitment to respond to a variety of pressing community health needs. It also reaffirms our commitment to investing in nonprofit capacity building and challenges the Foundation to expand our own capacity to serve the community.

What's Next

In the coming months we will revise our website to mirror our plan and show how we're operationalizing our strategy. In addition to our quarterly grant cycles and ongoing discretionary grants, we anticipate periodically issuing requests for proposals or inviting proposals to advance our plan. We will also adopt a dashboard to document our progress. We are pleased to continue our partnership with the Institute for Public Policy and Economic Development which provided core research for the development of our plan and will provide ongoing evaluation assistance to support our learning.

Want to Learn More?

We will hold a webinar, Tuesday, January 22 at 11AM to review our plan in greater detail and answer any questions. Click here to register. We also welcome the opportunity to meet one-on-one. Questions regarding school-based health and older adult isolation can be directed to Christine Marcos at cmarcos@mosestaylorfoundation.org. Questions regarding responsive grants and capacity building can be directed to Jeff Smith at jsmith@mosestaylorfoundation.org.

With our plan complete, now the real work begins. We look forward to staying in dialogue on what we're learning, what's going well and how we're reshaping our strategies based on the data and feedback we receive.

Thanks again to all our partners who participated in our strategic planning process. Thanks in advance for your collaboration moving forward.

Happy Holidays from All of Us!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season!
